How EMsculpt works

EMsculpt uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy, known as HIFEM, to make the muscles of the treated area contract on their own. The contractions are supramaximal: stronger and more sustained than anything you can achieve by exercising, because the signal bypasses the brain and works on the muscle directly.

One 30-minute session triggers around 20,000 of these contractions. The muscle responds the way it responds to intense training: fibres thicken and new fibres form, so the area becomes firmer and more defined. At the same time the energy demand of the contractions breaks down fat cells in the area, which the body then clears naturally over the following weeks.

Nothing touches the skin apart from the applicator strap, there are no needles, no anaesthetic and nothing to recover from. Most people describe the feeling as an intense workout without the effort.

What a course looks like

  1. 01

Free consultation. Dr Marie Duggan checks that EMsculpt suits you, examines the area and agrees a plan. You are under no obligation to book.

  2. 02

Four sessions of 30 minutes, usually over two weeks with two to three days between sessions. You lie down, the applicator is strapped to the area and the intensity is raised gradually to a level you are comfortable with.

  3. 03

Straight back to your day. There is no downtime; mild muscle soreness like after a hard workout is normal for a day or two.

  4. 04

Results from two to four weeks after the last session, continuing to improve for about three months as the muscle develops and the fat clears.

  5. 05

Free follow-up. We review the result with you and advise on maintenance, typically one session every three to six months.

Areas we treat

Abdomen: a firmer, flatter core and more visible definition.

Buttocks: lifted and firmer without implants or fillers.

These are the two areas the original EMsculpt is designed for.

With EMsculpt NEO, which the clinic also offers, we can treat arms, calves and thighs and add radiofrequency fat reduction to the same session. Dr Duggan will tell you at the consultation which device fits your goal.

Results you can expect

EMsculpt is a body sculpting treatment, not a weight loss treatment. It works best if you are close to a healthy weight and want more definition than diet and exercise are giving you, or want to rebuild core strength, for example after pregnancy.

Most people see a visible change after the course; the strongest results come from completing all four sessions and keeping to normal activity afterwards. Muscle gained through EMsculpt behaves like any other muscle: it stays as long as you stay active, and a maintenance session every few months keeps it at its best.

We photograph the area before the first session and at the follow-up, with your consent, so you can compare for yourself. No before and after photographs of other patients are shown on this page.

Is EMsculpt right for you?

Good candidates: adults of any age who are generally healthy, within a moderate range of their ideal weight, and who want to strengthen or define the abdomen or buttocks.

EMsculpt is not suitable during pregnancy, with a pacemaker, defibrillator or other electronic implant, with metal implants in or near the treated area, with a hernia at the treatment site, soon after surgery in the area, or with certain conditions such as epilepsy or an active malignancy. Dr Duggan goes through your medical history at the consultation and will say plainly if the treatment is not right for you.

If EMsculpt is not the answer, the consultation covers the alternatives the clinic offers, including EMsculpt NEO, Emsella for pelvic floor strength and EMtone for skin texture. You will never be sold a treatment you do not need.

Questions people ask before booking

Does EMsculpt hurt?

No. You feel strong muscle contractions and a tapping sensation, and the intensity is raised only as far as you are comfortable. Mild soreness the next day is normal.

How many sessions do I need?

Four sessions over about two weeks is the standard course. Dr Duggan may advise differently depending on your starting point and goal.

When will I see results?

Most people notice a change two to four weeks after the last session, with the full result at around three months.

How long do the results last?

As long as you stay reasonably active, the muscle stays. A maintenance session every three to six months keeps the result at its peak.

Is EMsculpt a weight loss treatment?

No. It reduces fat in the treated area and builds muscle, but it does not replace diet and exercise for overall weight loss.

Can I have EMsculpt after having a baby?

Yes, once your doctor is happy that you have recovered, and it is often used to rebuild core strength and tighten the abdomen. Dr Duggan will advise on timing at the consultation.

Is there any downtime?

None. You can drive, work and exercise the same day.

What is the difference between EMsculpt and EMsculpt NEO?

NEO adds radiofrequency heating to the HIFEM contractions, treats more areas and reduces more fat. Both are available at the clinic and the consultation covers which one suits you.

Who carries out the treatment?

Dr Marie Duggan, GMC 7488383, consults, plans and oversees every course; BTL-trained practitioners deliver the sessions.

Is the consultation really free?

Yes, and so is the follow-up. You are never under any obligation to book a course.
